UPDATE: The holiday travel rush is unfolding in Chicago as a record number of travelers flood the city’s airports and roads this weekend. With over 263,000 passengers expected to pass through O’Hare International Airport on Sunday alone, the urgency for travelers to plan ahead has never been greater.
According to the latest data from AAA, the worst time for travel is projected to be between 1 PM and 7 PM on Sunday. Travelers are urged to avoid peak hours as the holiday season continues to break previous records. “We are going to France for Christmas and will be there through New Year,” said traveler Jeff Brown. “No presents, we are buying memories.”
The Chicago Department of Aviation reports a 6% increase in air travel compared to last year, reflecting a nationwide trend of rising traveler numbers. Additionally, an estimated 5.7 million people are expected to hit Illinois tollways before January 1, marking a significant surge in road traffic as families reunite for the holidays.
“We’ve done it again,” stated Molly Hart, spokesperson for AAA. “Whether it was Thanksgiving, Christmas, or year-end, we are breaking records. People are getting on planes, hitting the road, and using all modes of transportation.”
Despite the large crowds, delays at O’Hare have been minimal, averaging only 15 minutes with very few cancellations reported. This news has brought relief to travelers like Ami Modi, who remarked, “First time with our 15-month-old, taking the longest trip that he’s ever taken so far.”
While Sunday is expected to be the busiest day for air travel at O’Hare, Midway Airport is anticipating its peak crowd on December 27. Travelers should plan accordingly and allow extra time as they navigate through the bustling terminals and crowded highways.
As the holiday rush continues, patience and preparedness are key for those venturing to reunite with loved ones this season. Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops.
