Jack Moynihan Receives Townsend Award for Community Excellence

URGENT UPDATE: Jack Moynihan, co-owner of Moynihan Lumber, was just awarded the prestigious Daniel Townsend Award for Excellence by the Lynnfield Select Board during a meeting on October 24, 2023. This honor recognizes his decades of unwavering service to the Lynnfield community and his remarkable contributions to local development and volunteerism.

Board Chair Phil Crawford highlighted that the Townsend Award is given annually to a Lynnfield resident who exemplifies “excellence in the area of volunteerism.” The award is named after Daniel Townsend, who sacrificed his life in the American Revolution on April 19, 1775.

Moynihan was nominated by former Select Board Chair Chris Barrett, who praised him for his extensive community involvement. “Jack’s contributions to our community span over multiple decades,” Barrett stated, noting that Moynihan embodies the essence of a true community leader.

Crawford emphasized, “We really look for people who have made decades of contributions. I think Jack Moynihan really does personify what the award is about.” Fellow Board member Dick Dalton added that Moynihan and his wife, Hilda, have been model citizens for 50 years, contributing selflessly without seeking publicity.

Moynihan’s impact on Lynnfield began over 40 years ago, with significant roles in various community initiatives. He served as Chair of the Comprehensive Housing and Planning Committee, guiding potential homeowners through the complexities of local governance. His leadership has been pivotal in projects like the Partridge Island project and the acquisition of the Lynnfield Center Golf Course.

Barrett further highlighted Moynihan’s contributions to the finance committee, stating that his leadership ensured fiscal stability during challenging economic times. Among his numerous achievements, he was instrumental in founding Lynnfield’s middle school and expanding other educational institutions. His support extends to young athletes through the North Shore Student-Athlete Award, recognizing promising student-athletes monthly.

In his acceptance speech, Moynihan expressed gratitude to the Board, Barrett, and his family. He stated, “In all the roles I have been fortunate to take part in, there is one theme that runs through it all: service above self.”

This recognition not only honors Moynihan’s contributions but also serves as an inspiration for others in the community.

As Lynnfield celebrates this achievement, residents are encouraged to reflect on the importance of volunteerism and community engagement. Stay tuned for more updates on local initiatives and the ongoing impact of community leaders like Jack Moynihan.
