James Donald “Jim” Early Passes Away at 87, Leaving Legacy of Service

BREAKING: James Donald “Jim” Early, age 87, passed away peacefully on December 18, 2025, in Waterford, New York. Known for his unwavering service to the community and his family, Jim’s legacy resonates deeply with all who knew him.

Born on July 3 and celebrating his birthday on the Fourth of July, Jim was a beacon of joy and kindness. He grew up in Schenectady, New York, as the third of five children to the late Joseph A. Early, Esq., and Loretto Powers Early. He is survived by his loving sister, Elizabeth M. Early, and many cherished nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

In a heartbreaking turn, Jim’s daughter, Mary Ellen Early, passed away on June 26, 2025, just months before his own death. He leaves behind four devoted daughters: Grace E. Boss of Waterford, Jane F. Early of Tonawanda, Margaret H. Warner of Halfmoon, and Kathleen L. Early of Waterford, alongside nine beloved grandchildren.

Jim Early’s impact extended far beyond his family. He dedicated his life to education, serving as a Guidance Counselor at St. Mary’s Academy in Glens Falls and teaching English Composition at Hudson Valley Community College for over three decades before retiring in December 1999. His commitment to education shaped countless lives.

In addition to his educational career, Jim was known for his dedication to public service. He served as the Sole Assessor for the Town and Village of Waterford for ten years after retirement. A proud member of the J. W. Ford Hose Volunteer Fire Department for 57 years, Jim embodied community spirit and camaraderie.

Jim’s love for music was evident in his role as a passionate church musician and talented pipe organist, most recently at Saint Joseph’s Parish in South Troy. His involvement with the Knights of Columbus and the Waterford Lions Club showcased his commitment to community service and fellowship.

As his health declined in recent years, Jim received compassionate care at the Eddy Heritage House Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center in Troy.

Friends and family are invited to pay their respects on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, followed by a funeral service on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption Church. Interment will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Waterford.

Jim’s enduring legacy of kindness, service, and faith will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. In lieu of flowers, the Early family suggests contributions to the Hospice Community in Rensselaer or the Waterford Fire Department.
