Johnson City Public Works Wins 2025 Project of the Year Award

BREAKING: Johnson City’s Public Works department has just been awarded the prestigious 2025 Mark Miller Project of the Year for their transformative work on the West Walnut Street Corridor Redevelopment Plan. The recognition was officially presented on September 24, 2023, during the annual conference of the Tennessee Chapter of the American Public Works Association, shining a spotlight on the city’s commitment to infrastructure improvement and community safety.

This $41 million project has revitalized a crucial area of Johnson City, enhancing accessibility and aesthetics while ensuring minimal disruption to daily life during construction. City Engineer Wallace McCulloch expressed pride in the Public Works team’s ability to maintain rigorous safety protocols throughout the project, stating,

“Despite challenges associated with aging infrastructure and historical complexities that created unique site factors, crews prevailed in delivering on a project that adds to the community’s quality of life.”

The West Walnut Corridor’s upgrades include pedestrian-friendly streets, significant updates to water and sewer systems, storm drains, and utilities. The installation of dedicated bike lanes and raised intersections highlights a strong focus on safety and mobility for all residents and visitors. This redevelopment not only enhances transportation options but fosters community engagement, connecting downtown Johnson City to East Tennessee State University.

City Manager Cathy Ball commended the teamwork and dedication of the Public Works staff, stating,

“Through its dedication, teamwork, and engagement, the employees of Public Works, Water and Sewer Services, and other City departments exemplified the values of our organization and the standards that this award honors.”

The project, which has already begun to transform the area’s landscape and functionality, serves as a vital gateway for pedestrians and cyclists alike, promoting a more interconnected and vibrant community.
