BREAKING: The New York Mets have officially signed Jorge Polanco to a $40 million, two-year contract, with the versatile infielder expected to transition primarily to first base. This move comes as the Mets look to fill the void left by fan favorite Pete Alonso, who recently signed a $155 million, five-year deal with the Baltimore Orioles.
During a Zoom news conference on Monday, Polanco confirmed his willingness to embrace this new role. “They told me that I’d be playing a good amount of first base, but that I could also be bouncing around,” he stated through a translator. Polanco, who has played primarily as a shortstop and second baseman in his career, is eager to showcase his versatility.
Polanco’s experience at first base is limited, having played only one pitch in this position. Last season, he primarily served as a designated hitter for the Seattle Mariners, where he achieved impressive stats: a .265 batting average, 26 home runs, 78 RBIs, and an .821 OPS over 138 games. “It was very easy because I had already spoken to my agent about starting to work out at first,” he remarked, highlighting his proactive approach to developing his skills.
The 32-year-old switch-hitter, an All-Star in 2019, set personal bests with 33 home runs and 98 RBIs in 2022. His adaptability is crucial for the Mets, especially as they navigate the transition period following Alonso’s departure.
Polanco’s only previous action at first base came during a game against the San Francisco Giants on April 6, 2025, when he was unable to field a hit that resulted in a walk-off win for the Giants. “Whenever you come into the game, the ball always finds you,” he recalled, underscoring the challenges of shifting positions.
The Mets are banking on Polanco’s athleticism and experience in multiple infield positions to bolster their lineup. “The biggest difference is the position that you get into to receive pickoffs,” Polanco explained, emphasizing the learning curve he faces in adapting to first base.
As fans await the upcoming season, Polanco’s transition could prove pivotal in the Mets’ pursuit of success. The team is expected to utilize him not only at first base but also in various infield roles, enhancing their depth and flexibility.
Stay tuned for updates as Polanco prepares for the new season with the Mets, making this a pivotal moment for both the player and the franchise.
