Langdon Area/Munich Claims Region 2B Volleyball Title, Heads to State

UPDATE: Langdon Area/Munich has just secured the Region 2B volleyball title with a decisive victory over Park River/Fordville-Lankin, clinching their spot in the upcoming state tournament. The match, held in Devils Lake on October 12, 2023, saw the defending champions dominate with set scores of 25-9, 25-15, and 25-13.

After a brief challenge in the third set, where they fell behind 7-5, Langdon Area/Munich showcased their resilience, surging to a commanding 19-9 lead. Coach Rich Olson credited the team’s defensive prowess and effective serving for their stellar performance, especially highlighting sophomore serve specialist Liv Prouty, who played a pivotal role in the rally.

“We were sparked by our defense tonight, there’s no question,” Olson stated. The final point was a block by Kemi Morstad, sealing the championship for Langdon Area/Munich and marking their third consecutive trip to the state tournament.

Park River/Fordville-Lankin’s coach, Nicole Wollangk, acknowledged the strong performance of Langdon Area/Munich, stating, “To their credit, they were flying around on defense. They played really well.” Despite the loss, Park River/Fordville-Lankin is set to compete in the state qualifier tournament on October 14, 2023, aiming for a return to the state tournament for the first time since 2016.

The match featured standout performances, with Hilary Haaven leading Langdon Area/Munich with 15 kills and 23 digs. Mya Swanson contributed significantly with seven kills and five aces.

In the third-place match, Benson County triumphed over New Rockford-Sheyenne with a score of 3-1, setting up a crucial opportunity to qualify for the state Class B tournament. Benson County will face the Region 1 runner-up on Saturday at 5 p.m. at the University of Jamestown.

The Region 2B All-Team selections were announced, with Ava Peterson of New Rockford-Sheyenne being named Region 2 Senior of the Year and Nicole Wollangk named Coach of the Year.

Langdon Area/Munich’s impressive season record now stands at 36-5, reinforcing their status as a formidable contender in the upcoming state tournament. As they prepare for this next challenge, the team’s chemistry and determination shine through, promising an exciting postseason ahead.
