Livonia Baker Launches Free Food Pantry Amid SNAP Changes

UPDATE: A Livonia baker is making headlines this holiday season by launching a free food pantry to support families struggling with recent changes to SNAP benefits. Hassan Makki, owner of Sweet 220 Bakery, opened the pantry inside his bakery to provide essential food items to those in need throughout Metro Detroit.

The initiative comes at a critical time as many families face financial difficulties due to reduced SNAP benefits. “One of the most beautiful things about our culture is the hospitality and giving back, and I hold that with a huge sense of pride,” Makki stated. His mother is actively collecting food donations, and local customers have contributed supplies, ensuring the pantry remains well-stocked.

Visitors to the pantry can find a variety of items, including rice, beans, pasta, peanut butter, oats, canned goods, canned fruits, vegetables, along with fresh fruit and bread—all offered completely free of charge. “Everything over here is free,” Makki emphasized, welcoming families to come in and take what they need.

Community members like Ramia Elhussaini and Teresa Morris praised the bakery’s efforts. Morris remarked, “Especially with everything that’s going on with the SNAP benefits, this is just a great opportunity for people to come in and grab things that they may need.”

Makki’s commitment to community service extends beyond the pantry; in 2023, he delivered treats to line workers and first responders after power outages struck the area. This holiday season, he plans to adopt three families, focusing on those facing significant hardships.

One heart-wrenching nomination described a single mother who adopted three children and took guardianship of her niece due to her brother’s struggles with addiction. “I’m still grieving, and days when I can’t sleep, it would be nice to have a sweet treat to brighten my mood for a moment,” the nomination read, highlighting the emotional impact of Makki’s generosity.

Makki shared, “I’ve been through family hardship and loss, and it’s hard to read them, man. Especially when you go home, you know, the heat is on, the fridge is full of food.” His empathy drives his mission to help others.

The food pantry will operate year-round, and Makki is actively seeking community support to expand its offerings. Families can nominate individuals for holiday treats through Sweet 220 Bakery’s Instagram account, @sweet220.

This initiative not only provides immediate relief to families in distress but also fosters a sense of community and compassion during a challenging season. As the holiday spirit fills the air, Makki’s actions serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of giving back.
