Since joining the Rotary Club on October 22, 1924, Smith has attended an estimated 2,500 meetings, showcasing remarkable dedication akin to the legendary baseball player Lou Gehrig, who made headlines for his own record of consecutive games. At 78 years old, Smith attributes his consistent participation to good health and a strong sense of habit.
Smith’s journey with the Rotary began just five months after the club’s founding in Great Barrington. Over the decades, he has witnessed significant changes in the community, outlasting both fellow Rotarians and the venues where meetings were held. Many of these locations, like the Wayside Inn, have vanished, while others have undergone dramatic renovations.
In reflecting on his remarkable record, Smith stated, “Once I started going, I just kept going. And I never got into the habit of going anywhere else, so I was usually around.” His commitment has been so steadfast that he has maintained a perfect attendance record by utilizing a provision that allows members to “make up” missed meetings at other Rotary events.
Born in 1896 in Great Barrington, Smith’s local roots run deep. After graduating from MIT in 1914 with a degree in electrical engineering, he established a radio repair shop in a time when radios were a rarity in town. His business thrived for 34 years on Main Street, reflecting his exemplary work ethic—he once went 23 years without taking a day off.
