UPDATE: Travelers flying through Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) will experience a dramatic transformation at Terminal 1 just in time for the holiday season. The largest interior renovation of the terminal, costing $242 million, has been completed, as announced by the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) and Delta Air Lines.
Starting in the fall of 2023, this extensive project focused on creating a “unified and modern design” across six of the airport’s seven concourses and 75 Delta gate hold rooms. The renovations are expected to significantly enhance the travel experience for the approximately 70% of passengers who choose Delta at this major hub.
Brian Ryks, CEO of the MAC, emphasized the impact of these upgrades, stating, “In a matter of two years, we have witnessed a major transformation of the post-security areas of Terminal 1 that elevates the passenger experience — from the checkpoints to the gate areas.” He praised Delta for its role in delivering modern spaces that align with MSP’s commitment to award-winning customer service.
Key improvements include modern terrazzo or carpet flooring, updated wall finishes, and energy-efficient LED lighting fixtures. Additionally, Delta’s gate areas have undergone a comprehensive refresh with new seating, carpeting, counters, and signage. The installation of “dynamic gate signs” will allow travelers to quickly access flight and destination information from further down the concourse.
The ongoing renovations coincide with the final phases of another substantial effort to modernize all pre-security areas, known as the Airport Modernization Program, which has also recently concluded. This program, which cost $182.5 million, was complemented by Delta’s contribution of $60 million.
As holiday travel ramps up, these enhancements at MSP Airport are set to make a significant impact on traveler comfort and efficiency. With a commitment to excellence in customer service, MSP is poised to deliver an upgraded experience that meets the needs of today’s travelers.
Stay tuned for more updates as MSP continues to evolve in response to the growing demands of air travel.
