URGENT UPDATE: The Maricopa County Department of Emergency Management has announced a crucial test of the Palo Verde Generating Station’s emergency alert systems set for December 4. This vital exercise aims to ensure the facility is ready to respond effectively in case of an actual emergency.
At 12:00 p.m. and 12:30 p.m., sirens will sound for approximately three minutes within a 10-mile radius of the nuclear plant. Additionally, a Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) will be activated at 12:15 p.m., specifically targeting residents who have opted to receive these notifications.
Officials emphasize that this is a test only, stating,
“This is a test of Maricopa County Wireless Emergency Alert system. No action is required,”
according to the Arizona Emergency Information Network. Personnel in the area will monitor the sirens’ activation and report findings back to emergency management officials following the tests.
These tests comply with standards set by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), ensuring that all alert and notification systems function correctly. In the event of a real emergency, the sirens would direct residents to seek critical information via their radios and television broadcasts.
Emergency agencies, including the Maricopa County Department of Emergency Management, the Sheriff’s Office, and the Arizona Department of Public Safety, would initiate alerts, followed by an Emergency Alert System (EAS) message providing vital instructions.
For those needing more information on the testing process, the Maricopa County Department of Emergency Management can be contacted at 602-273-1411 or visit Maricopa.gov/ready.
This test is a reminder of the importance of public safety readiness and community awareness in emergency situations. Stay informed and share this critical update with others to ensure everyone is prepared.
