UPDATE: Massachusetts is gearing up for its much-anticipated Maple Weekend on March 7-8, 2024. More than two dozen local maple producers will open their doors to the public, offering a unique opportunity to explore the art of maple sugaring and taste this year’s harvest.
This weekend promises an immersive experience for families and enthusiasts alike. Visitors can get an up-close look at the process of making maple syrup, including educational tours at locations like Drumlin Farm in Lincoln, where guests can witness sap collection firsthand.
Local producers began tapping their trees last month, and now is the perfect time to enjoy the fruits of their labor. The event is organized by the Massachusetts Maple Producers Association, representing over 300 sugarhouses across the state. This open house format allows families to visit multiple sugarhouses, with many offering special activities.
Kim Trust, president of the association, noted that many sugarhouses will enhance the experience with pancake breakfasts, maple hot cocoa, and traditional treats such as “sugar on snow.” This is a rare chance to enjoy these delights in an authentic setting.
Two notable locations participating are Ioka Valley Farm in Hancock and Maynard Maple. Ioka Valley will feature family-friendly activities, including maple cream making and a tree bark identification game. The farm also has a café serving pancakes, waffles, and French toast every weekend until early April.
For those looking for a unique maple-flavored twist, Trust encourages visitors to explore local businesses that incorporate maple syrup into their offerings, such as Deep Roots Distillery, known for its seasonal maple-themed drinks.
In addition to the sugarhouse tours, educational events will take place at Breakheart Reservation in Saugus on March 14 and Blue Hill Reservation in Canton on March 14-15. These events will delve into the history of maple sugaring in Massachusetts, including demonstrations of traditional methods used by Native Americans.
As excitement builds for Maple Weekend, now is the time to plan your visit. With a mixture of education, delicious food, and the charm of local sugarhouses, this event is not to be missed. Mark your calendars for March 7-8 and prepare for a sweet experience!
