UPDATE: Massachusetts taxpayers will start receiving significant rebates today, with many finding hundreds to over a thousand dollars in their bank accounts. Governor Charlie Baker‘s administration has confirmed that approximately 3 million taxpayers are eligible for these rebates, triggered by a law that limits state revenue.
Rebates will be distributed between now and December 15, with payments sent on a rolling basis. If you filed your 2021 tax returns, check your bank account for a payment labeled “MASTTAXRFD” if you opted for direct deposit. Otherwise, expect a check in the mail.
This week alone, officials are sending out 500,000 payments, with an additional 1 million expected next week. Most eligible taxpayers should receive their payments this month. If you haven’t filed your 2021 tax return yet, you still have time; file by September 15, 2023, for a refund approximately one month after submission.
Rebate amounts vary significantly based on income. For example, someone earning $35,000 will receive around $200, while taxpayers making over $1 million may see rebates exceeding $7,000.
In addition to the rebate news, there’s urgency surrounding a new statewide ban on disposing of mattresses and textiles in Massachusetts, effective today. Officials have stated that while they won’t typically fine individuals for violations, it’s crucial to follow the new regulations.
In a separate development, authorities have identified the long-unidentified murder victim known as the ‘Lady of the Dunes’ as Ruth Marie Terry, a 37-year-old from Tennessee. This revelation marks a significant breakthrough in a case that has puzzled Massachusetts for decades. While the killer remains unknown, officials hope that identifying Terry will lead to new insights.
As residents prepare for the upcoming election, today at 5 p.m. marks the deadline for ballot submissions. Secretary of State Bill Galvin recommends voters drop off their ballots in person to ensure they are counted.
Stay tuned for further updates on these developing stories, and make sure to check your bank accounts for those rebates!
