Mayor Odman Unveils Vision for Milton-Freewater’s Future

UPDATE: Mayor Mike Odman is set to unveil a bold vision for the future of Milton-Freewater during the city’s inaugural “State of the City” presentation on February 24, 2024, at 6 p.m. at McLoughlin High School. This landmark event not only marks the city’s 75th anniversary since its formation but also aims to address pressing challenges and foster community connection.

City officials are grappling with significant issues, including the search for a new city manager for the second time in just two years, filling two crucial department head positions, and upgrading essential water and electrical systems. Mayor Odman and Interim City Manager Tim Johnson believe this moment is crucial for transparency and community engagement.

Odman stated, “This is a chance to speak about our history and the vision behind that.” The presentation will cover the city’s milestones and outline a pathway toward revitalization. Attendees can expect light refreshments, including cake, and a performance by the McLoughlin High School Crimson and Black choir, alongside a U.S. National Color Guard presentation.

The history of Milton and Freewater is rich, with serious discussions about consolidation beginning as early as 1947. A military veterans group advocated for this move to cut government costs and enhance service delivery. Despite initial resistance, the community voted in favor of consolidation in the November 1950 election, officially designating the combined entity as Milton-Freewater in 1951.

“This dash represents connection,” Odman emphasized, indicating that his presentation will focus on bridging the past with promising future opportunities. He stressed the importance of community identity, declaring, “Our community has struggled with an identity crisis for a long time, and I want us to get that figured out.”

The city council is committed to improving efficiency, accountability, and communication as they work toward revitalizing the community. Mayor Odman believes it is now this generation’s responsibility to shape the future, stating, “How do we build, revive our community, and go forward?”

As residents prepare to gather for this pivotal event, there is an air of anticipation. The “State of the City” presentation promises to not only reflect on the past but also inspire the community to embrace the future with renewed vigor.

Residents are encouraged to participate in the discussion, providing feedback to city officials after the event. This presentation represents a crucial step in redefining Milton-Freewater’s identity and laying the groundwork for a prosperous future. Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with city leaders and share your vision for a brighter Milton-Freewater!
