Meriden Man Convicted of Kidnapping, Robbery in Sneaker Deal

UPDATE: A Meriden man, 24-year-old Addison Clegg, has been convicted of first-degree kidnapping, robbery, and strangulation during a botched sneaker sale. A jury in New Britain Superior Court delivered the verdict, confirming Clegg’s involvement in a violent crime that escalated horrifyingly during a transaction arranged via Facebook Marketplace.

According to a statement from the Connecticut Division of Criminal Justice, Clegg’s actions were shocking. He strangled the victim into unconsciousness, allowing an accomplice to steal the victim’s legally registered 9mm firearm and vehicle. The victim, upon regaining consciousness, managed to escape from the moving vehicle on Cromwell Avenue in Rocky Hill, enduring serious injuries, including a broken foot.

This incident, which took place during an attempt to purchase sneakers, highlights the risks involved in online transactions. The court records reveal the terrifying details of the crime that unfolded, capturing the attention of law enforcement and the local community.

Judge Chris Pelosi has set Clegg’s sentencing for March 25. Prosecutors, including Senior Assistant State’s Attorney David Clifton, praised the victim’s bravery:

“The victim’s courage cannot be understated. But for his quick thinking under terrifying conditions, allowing him to escape from his abductors, who knows how this violent encounter would have ended?”

New Britain State’s Attorney Christian M. Watson expressed gratitude towards the investigative efforts of the Rocky Hill and Middletown police departments, highlighting the vital role played by Detectives Patrick Lehane, Thomas Ganley, and Officer Brandon Caires. He also thanked Hartford Hospital for their medical intervention and the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection-Division of Scientific Services for their analytical support.

As communities become increasingly connected through online platforms, this case serves as a grim reminder of the potential dangers lurking in seemingly routine transactions. Authorities urge individuals to exercise caution when meeting strangers for any exchange.

This developing story underscores the importance of safety in online dealings and the swift action of law enforcement in responding to violent crimes. Stay tuned for further updates as this case progresses toward sentencing.
