Midland School Board Votes on Superintendent’s Future Monday

URGENT UPDATE: The Midland Public Schools Board of Education is poised to make pivotal decisions regarding Superintendent Penny Miller-Nelson at their meeting on Monday, December 15, 2023. This crucial gathering will take place at 7 p.m. at the MPS administration center, located at 600 East Carpenter.

The board will enter a closed session to conduct a thorough evaluation of Miller-Nelson’s performance, followed by a vote on her evaluation. Following this, the board will decide on the renewal of her contract—decisions that could significantly impact the district’s leadership and direction.

In addition to evaluating Miller-Nelson, the agenda includes several key presentations, such as updates from the Superintendent Student Advisory Team and a high school athletics update. Following public comments, the board will hear reports from the curriculum, instruction, and assessment committee, as well as the finance, facilities, and operations committee.

The board will also consider a resolution for the sale of a vacant property at 2900 Dauer Street to Midland County Habitat for Humanity for $250,000. This site, formerly home to Ashman School, is set to be transformed into a community with 14 single-family homes, built by MPS building trades students, demonstrating the district’s commitment to hands-on learning and community engagement.

Additionally, the board will discuss the approval of gifts totaling $27,800, further enhancing the district’s programs and resources.

Make sure to stay tuned for updates as these critical evaluations and decisions unfold on Monday. The next board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 20, 2024, at 6:30 p.m., marking the start of a new term for the board.

This meeting holds significant implications for the future of Midland Public Schools, and community members are encouraged to participate and voice their opinions.
