M&T Bank to Close 8 Connecticut Branches by April 30

URGENT UPDATE: M&T Bank has just announced the closure of eight branches located within Stop & Shop stores across Connecticut by the end of April. This decision impacts customers at locations in Hamden, Simsbury, Stratford, and Vernon, with closures beginning as early as April 16.

The affected branches include those at 2331 Dixwell Ave in Hamden, 489 Bushy Hill Road in Simsbury, 200 E. Main St. in Stratford, and 50 Windsorville Road in Vernon, all scheduled to close on April 16. The remaining branches in Bridgeport, Milford, Westport, and Wilton will close by April 30, affecting locations such as 4531 Main St. and 1790 Post Road East.

M&T Bank, which operates 155 branches and ATMs in Connecticut, emphasized that these closures are part of an ongoing strategy to adjust to evolving customer needs. A spokesperson stated, “As the needs of our customers continue to evolve, we are committed to adapting our branch network to best serve our communities.”

In response to these changes, M&T Bank plans to replace the closed branches with standalone ATMs. Additionally, two other locations at 931 Torringford St. in Torrington and 410 Reidville Drive in Waterbury are also impacted; however, new leases for standalone branches in those cities are already secured.

The bank assures that these closures will not lead to layoffs, as employees affected will be offered positions at other branches within the network. M&T Bank employs approximately 2,100 individuals statewide and has the third-highest amount of in-state deposits, following its merger with People’s United Bank in 2022.

Customers are urged to stay informed about the upcoming changes and to visit M&T Bank’s website for further details regarding branch transitions. As the situation develops, residents can expect enhanced service options through new branches and ATMs that aim to meet their banking needs more effectively.
