Nazareth Wrestling Surges Past Northampton with Key Upsets

UPDATE: In a thrilling dual meet, Nazareth’s wrestling team overcame Northampton with a decisive 37-28 victory on Friday night. Key performances from seniors Elijah Simak and Brayden Zuercher, who both bumped up two weight classes, were crucial to the Blue Eagles’ success.

Simak, competing at 215 pounds against Northampton junior Joell Small, showcased his speed and agility, scoring seven takedowns in just 3:21. His dominance on the mat gave Nazareth a pivotal 31-28 lead heading into the final match.

“I knew I had the speed on him,” Simak declared. “He has no chance of finishing; he can’t keep up with me.” His performance symbolized the team’s relentless drive, as they secured four consecutive bonus point wins in the final bouts.

Zuercher sealed the victory at heavyweight, pinning Northampton senior Brandon McEntire in just 48 seconds. This remarkable finish capped off a night where Nazareth again proved their mettle, improving their record to 2-0.

Despite being outmatched in weight, both Simak and Zuercher accepted the challenge, reflecting the team’s commitment to collective success. Coach Dave Crowell emphasized the importance of flexibility: “Anything we can do for the team, we’re all in,” he stated. “That gives you the ability to bump up when you have to.”

Simak, who weighs around 173 pounds, attributed his success to a fearless mindset: “No fear, no nothing. I can get out of any position,” he said, demonstrating confidence that carried through the match. Crowell noted Simak’s strategic choice to start from the bottom, emphasizing growth: “We always go bottom during the season…you have to do that.”

On the other side, Northampton faced challenges, including a critical forfeit at 107 pounds due to freshman Benjamin Schoenberger missing weight. Coach Joe Provini expressed concern over this setback, stating, “Our guys are going to have to ask themselves what kind of season we want to have going forward.”

Despite the loss, the Konkrete Kids had bright spots, with Schoenberger, sophomore Brayden Werich, and junior Gabe Ballard each winning by fall. However, the intensity displayed by Nazareth proved too much to overcome.

Simak highlighted the team’s mindset: “Our coach wanted us to get as many shots as we could, no stopping just because we’re up,” he said, reflecting the team’s aggressive strategy. Crowell echoed this sentiment, noting their superior attack throughout the match.

Looking ahead, Nazareth will prepare for another rivalry dual meet against Easton at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Fans can expect more intense action as both teams continue to compete at high levels.

This latest victory showcases Nazareth’s resilience and determination, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.
