UPDATE: A striking new 22-foot-tall sculpture of three massive filmstrips has just been unveiled on the 101 Freeway median in East Hollywood. This eye-catching artwork is part of the $5.87 million beautification project aimed at enhancing the iconic highway.
The sculpture, made from galvanized steel, is located south of Melrose Avenue and represents the heartbeat of the Hollywood film industry. Designed to mimic the wave-like flow of traffic, it features three panels of filmstrips that reflect the creativity and spirit of Los Angeles cinema.
Designed by the Caltrans District 7 team and fabricated by Benchmark Arts, this project is the final piece of the broader Clean California initiative. The initiative aims to revitalize state highways, improving aesthetics and safety for drivers and pedestrians alike. The surrounding landscaped areas, which enhance the visual appeal of the highway, were completed last year.
According to Colleen Park, Public Information Officer for Caltrans District 7, “This sculpture is not just art; it’s a celebration of our culture and the film industry that has defined Los Angeles.” The project also includes improved landscaping along 8.7 miles of the 101, between Lankershim Boulevard and North Beaudry Avenue.
This installation is set to attract attention from both locals and tourists, making it a new landmark for the area. As drivers navigate the busy freeway, they will now be greeted by this monumental tribute to the art of film, enhancing the driving experience and connecting them to the heart of Hollywood.
The completion of this sculpture marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to beautify California’s highways, making them more inviting for everyone. The project serves as a reminder of the importance of public art in community spaces and its role in enhancing cultural identity.
With the unveiling just happening today, this development is already creating buzz across social media, as residents share their excitement about the new addition to the city’s landscape.
