New Lenox Library Launches Urgent Care Cabinet, Offers Narcan

UPDATE: The New Lenox Public Library has just launched a vital care cabinet in response to community needs. Opened on December 4, 2023, this initiative provides essential items—including Narcan—without any questions asked to support residents in need.

Library Executive Director Michelle Krooswyk emphasized that this new resource aims to help those who may feel uncomfortable asking for assistance. The care cabinet, located in the lobby, offers free items such as shower products, deodorant, toothpaste, gloves, chapstick, first-aid supplies, and socks, alongside Narcan, a medication crucial for reversing opioid overdoses.

This initiative was funded by a $1,000 grant from the Friends of the New Lenox Library, which recognized the urgent need for support after cuts to federal food benefits affected low-income residents in early November. “We want to be a reliable resource for our community during difficult times,” Krooswyk stated.

The decision to open the cabinet earlier than planned was driven by a pressing community need. Administrative Library Coordinator Melissa Seaberg noted the significant demand for items, particularly lip balm, gloves, deodorant, and toothbrushes, indicating the critical role this cabinet will play in the community.

“Providing assistance without judgement allows individuals to receive support in a dignified manner,” Seaberg explained. The library has partnered with the Heroin Epidemic Relief Organization to distribute Narcan, reinforcing its commitment to combat the opioid epidemic.

Krooswyk encouraged community members to participate in upcoming Narcan training sessions, highlighting the lifesaving potential of the medication. The overwhelming community support has already led to many residents contributing supplies, prompting the library to regulate donations to ensure hygiene and proper packaging.

While donations are welcomed, Krooswyk urged that items should not be placed directly in the cabinet. Instead, monetary contributions can be made through the library’s website or via an Amazon wish list.

The inspiration for the care cabinet stemmed from a presentation by the Rock Island Public Library, showcasing the importance of collaborative efforts among libraries. “We are always looking for innovative ways to support our community,” Krooswyk said.

Looking ahead, the library plans to maintain the care cabinet indefinitely, ensuring it remains stocked during library hours. Additionally, a crocheted cat fundraiser, designed to engage the community, will conclude on December 16, 2023.

The New Lenox Library is also set to unveil a new café space in January and is gearing up for its 25th anniversary celebration next year. With plans for further renovations under discussion, Krooswyk affirmed the library’s dedication to providing essential resources beyond literary needs.

As this initiative unfolds, the New Lenox Library stands as a beacon of support, committed to meeting the urgent needs of its community. Stay tuned for more updates on this impactful program and other developments at the library.
