New Yorkers Urged to Recycle Christmas Trees Now – It’s Easy!

URGENT UPDATE: New Yorkers can now easily recycle their Christmas trees following the end of the holiday season. Thanks to an expanded curbside composting program, residents no longer need to wait for special collection days to dispose of their real Christmas trees.

According to the NYC Department of Sanitation, city residents can place their real trees and holiday wreaths at the curb on their designated weekly composting and recycling days. This change means that homeowners can dispose of their trees alongside other compostable materials such as food scraps and yard waste, making it more convenient than ever.

IMPORTANT: Before placing trees out for collection, ensure all decorations, ornaments, and stands are removed. Trees should not be wrapped in plastic bags to facilitate proper recycling. Once collected, these trees are chipped and combined with leaves, turning them into valuable compost or renewable energy for the city.

For those with artificial trees, the disposal process is straightforward. Remove the metal base and trunk and place these components with other metal recyclables.

Additionally, the NYC Parks department is gearing up for its annual Mulchfest event, which runs from December 26, 2025 to January 11, 2026. During this time, New Yorkers can drop off their trees at select locations across the city. The trees will be transformed into wood chips that help nourish city trees, contributing to a greener urban environment.

Residents who participate in Mulchfest on “Chipping Weekend” – specifically on Saturday, January 10 and Sunday, January 11 – can take home a bag of mulch for their gardens or to create a winter bed for a street tree.

Last year, more than 52,500 trees were recycled during this initiative, showcasing the city’s commitment to sustainability and community involvement.

This is more than just tree disposal; it’s about making a positive impact in your community and helping the environment. Share this vital information with your friends and neighbors so they can participate too!
