UPDATE: The Nez Perce Tribe showcased its commitment to community collaboration during a pivotal presentation on October 17, 2023, at the Red Wolf Golf Club in Clarkston. Elected officials from Asotin County and neighboring regions gathered for a two-hour session aimed at highlighting the tribe’s significant contributions and aspirations in the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley.
Chairperson Shannon Wheeler emphasized the tribe’s desire to work closely with local leaders, stating, “When the tribe comes to town, we bring a lot to the community. We want to be the best neighbor you have.” This urgent message underscores the tribe’s intent to forge strong partnerships that benefit all residents.
The Nez Perce Tribe is a major economic force, serving as the third-largest employer in the region with approximately 1,500 jobs provided to local residents. Currently boasting over 3,500 enrolled members, the tribe’s historical roots trace back to areas across present-day Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, including the land where the golf club is situated. “Our people have always maintained connections to these places,” stated Nakia Williamson, manager of the cultural resources program.
The tribe is actively pursuing new opportunities. They purchased the Red Wolf Golf Club in 2019 and are in the process of applying to place the land in trust. If successful, this could lead to the introduction of sports betting and card games at the venue. Another recent acquisition, the former Umpqua Bank building on Diagonal Street, is undergoing a similar trust application, although no gaming activities are planned for that site, according to Nikoli Greene, executive officer of Nez Perce Tribal Enterprises.
Greene expressed the tribe’s vision for collaboration, stating, “We are stronger and more vibrant when we work together.” The presentation concluded with local officials expressing their support for building positive relationships with the tribe. Asotin County Commissioner Brian Shinn noted, “We won’t always agree on everything, but we can always work together.”
This event marks a significant step in fostering unity and understanding between the Nez Perce Tribe and surrounding communities. As they strive for enhanced engagement, the tribe aims to create partnerships in good faith, ensuring mutual benefits for all parties involved.
The Nez Perce Tribe’s outreach highlights the potential for future developments and collaborative projects that could reshape the local economy and cultural landscape. Stakeholders are encouraged to stay updated on these evolving partnerships, which promise to bring long-lasting positive impacts to the region.
