UPDATE: As winter approaches, Niagara County is taking proactive measures to avoid a repeat of last year’s rock salt shortage that left communities scrambling during major snowstorms. Highway departments across the county are stocking up early, ensuring they have sufficient supplies ahead of the first snowfall.
In the Town of Wheatfield, Highway Superintendent Paul Siegmann confirmed that their early preparations last year helped them narrowly avoid running out of rock salt. “We were fortunate that we had enough in stockpile that we didn’t run out. We did get close,” Siegmann stated, highlighting the urgency of the situation from last winter.
As nearby towns faced depleting supplies, municipalities like Wheatfield collaborated to keep essential roads and intersections clear. “Our 12 towns in the county, and even some of the cities like North Tonawanda, if somebody was totally out of salt, we would share salt with them,” Siegmann added. This cooperative effort was crucial during last year’s harsh winter.
Similarly, Niagara County’s Department of Highways and Parks faced significant challenges. Superintendent Richard Sirianni reported that American Rock Salt, the state’s main supplier, struggled to meet demand last winter, forcing towns to ration their limited supplies. “If I needed 500 tons, they’d send me 200 and spread it around for everybody,” Sirianni explained, emphasizing the critical nature of the supply issue.
In a bid to prevent a shortage this year, Sirianni has already ordered hundreds of additional tons of rock salt to build a reserve before the first major snowfall. “It gives us a little bit of a safety net,” he remarked. “We’re as prepared as we could be.”
Officials have not reported any signs of an impending shortage at this time, but they are urging residents to practice patience and allow snowplows the space they need to operate effectively once winter weather arrives. The public safety message is clear: be aware and vigilant as conditions can change rapidly.
Inquiries have been made to Governor Kathy Hochul‘s office and American Rock Salt regarding potential changes to supply and distribution plans should shortages resurface. Responses are anticipated soon.
This proactive approach by Niagara County’s highway departments aims to safeguard communities against the unpredictable nature of winter weather and ensure that vital transportation routes remain accessible. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and prepare for the upcoming winter season.
