UPDATE: The New York Gaming Facility Location Board is set to award up to three full casino licenses in New York City during a crucial meeting on December 1, 2023, at 10 a.m. in Manhattan. This long-awaited decision marks the end of a two-year campaign to introduce full casino gambling, including popular table games like blackjack and roulette, to the area.
As the board convenes, the stakes are high for the remaining bidders, with only three contenders vying for these lucrative licenses. Notably, the board may not award all licenses, heightening the suspense surrounding the outcome of this meeting.
One of the leading candidates is Resorts World New York City, currently operating a video gaming facility at Aqueduct Racetrack in South Ozone Park, Queens. Their ambitious proposal involves a staggering investment of $5.5 billion to create a new 500,000 square-foot gaming floor featuring over 6,000 slot machines and 800 table games. Additionally, the plan includes the construction of 2,000 hotel rooms and a 7,000-seat entertainment arena.
“This is a transformative opportunity for New York City,” said a Resorts World spokesperson.
Another strong contender is the Metropolitan Park plan, backed by Steve Cohen, owner of the New York Mets, in collaboration with Hard Rock Casino. If approved, this project will rise on a 50-acre parking lot adjacent to Citi Field, offering 5,000 slot machines, 375 table games, and an 18,000 square-foot sportsbook. The development also promises a 25-acre public park, new shops, restaurants, and a Taste of Queens food hall.
The third proposal comes from Bally’s Casino, seeking to establish a location in Throggs Neck, Bronx. Their chances improved significantly after MGM Empire City withdrew from the bidding last month. Bally’s ambitious plan features a 500,000 square-foot gaming floor with 3,500 slot machines and 250 table games, including poker. The project also includes a 2,000-seat event center, restaurants, retail shops, and a spa, all proposed for the site of the Ballys Links Golf Casino.
