NYU Student Attack: Suspect Arrested, Has 16 Past Arrests

UPDATE: A suspect has been arrested in the shocking attack on a New York University student that unfolded Monday morning in Greenwich Village. James Rizzo, 45, was taken into custody after police linked him to the brutal assault captured on video, which left the victim, a 20-year-old student, injured and traumatized.

The incident occurred around 9:00 AM in front of 735 Broadway, where Rizzo allegedly approached the victim from behind, yanked her hair, and slapped her head and buttocks, ultimately knocking her to the ground. Bystanders were horrified as they witnessed the attack, with a group of women stepping in to help and immediately calling 911.

Witnesses are still reeling from the violent act. NYU graduate student Ashlyn Prieto expressed her fears, stating, “I saw the video as well, which was scary and very disturbing. It’s definitely something to be more on the lookout for, especially during my commute.”

Rizzo’s criminal history is extensive, with 16 prior arrests and a recent release from state prison in September after serving two years for persistent sexual abuse. In a shocking twist, he was also charged with murder back in 1997. His past includes groping another woman on Greene Street just days before the attack, during which he reportedly asked, “Oh, you want more?”

The NYPD arrested Rizzo on Tuesday after responding to a report of a man sleeping in a building nearby. Investigators quickly connected him to the assault, and he now faces charges of persistent sexual abuse, forcible touching, and assault. Despite the gravity of the situation, Rizzo remained silent as he was led out of the 6th precinct in handcuffs.

In light of the attack, NYU has stepped up its support for the victim. University spokesperson John Beckman stated, “The University is pleased that a suspect has been apprehended in the attack on one of its students. We take this incident very seriously and are continuing to offer support to the student.”

Authorities are now investigating whether Rizzo is tied to other random assaults on female NYU students, raising fears of a broader pattern of violence. As this story develops, the community remains on high alert.

Stay tuned for more updates as police continue their investigation and the NYU community rallies to support the victim.
