This campaign, modeled after a successful program in Tulsa, aims to clear state properties of unsightly encampments and debris, with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) and the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) at the forefront of these efforts.
Just announced today, this initiative responds directly to demands from local businesses and residents for a cleaner and safer Oklahoma City. Governor Stitt emphasized the need for action, stating, “After the success of Operation SAFE in Tulsa, business leaders and stakeholders quickly requested the state to do the same here in Oklahoma City.”
Operation SAFE targets various state-owned lands, including underpasses and government buildings, in a systematic approach to enhance public spaces. In a groundbreaking partnership, the state is collaborating with Key to Home, a local initiative designed to assist those displaced from state properties by connecting them to essential support services and housing opportunities.
Key to Home, established in 2023, has already made significant strides by engaging over 50 partners across public, private, and non-profit sectors. The initiative has successfully connected 446 individuals to housing and closed down 25 encampments within Oklahoma City. Jamie Caves, the Homeless Strategy Implementation Manager for the Key to Home Partnership, stated, “We’ve worked hard to coordinate efforts more effectively and create a streamlined pathway to restoration for our neighbors who are sleeping outside.”
