UPDATE: Parkland High School has just secured a thrilling 54-49 victory over Allentown Central Catholic in a pivotal boys basketball matchup at Rockne Hall on January 13, 2024. This win not only halts Parkland’s three-game losing streak but also boosts their confidence as they head into the crucial playoff season.
The Trojans faced a tough first half, with leading scorer Blake Nassry struggling, going 0-for-7 and scoreless until the third quarter. However, it was the senior trio of Tyler Beck, Jude Ruisch, and Ryan Kearney who stepped up, combining for 18 points in the second quarter to turn the tide after trailing 16-9. Beck emerged as the standout performer, netting a career-high 19 points, including critical shots that propelled Parkland to a commanding lead.
In the decisive third quarter, Parkland dominated, shooting 6-for-11 from the field and 4-for-6 from three-point range. Beck’s 3-pointer extended their lead to 37-25 with just over five minutes remaining in the quarter. Ruisch added momentum with his shooting, hitting four crucial free throws in the fourth quarter to help maintain the lead.
The Vikings, who entered the game with an 8-4 record, managed to keep it close initially, with junior Cameron Hines contributing 17 points and junior Yariel Gonzalez adding 11 points. However, they struggled offensively in the critical moments of the second half, shooting just 4-for-15 in the third quarter, which allowed Parkland to take control.
Coach Eddie Ohlson praised his team’s resilience, stating, “We kept trusting each other, and when one guy makes one shot, we start building confidence.” The Trojans, now 7-4 overall and 3-1 in the EPC, aim to build on this victory as they navigate through challenging upcoming games.
The emotional toll of the last few games was evident, but Beck emphasized the importance of teamwork. “Anyone can score on our team. The team goes really deep,” he remarked. The victory provides a much-needed boost for Parkland as they work to integrate players back into the lineup, including TJ Lawrence and Javien Porter, who are recovering from injuries.
Looking forward, Parkland will focus on building chemistry and depth as they prepare for the February playoffs. Central Catholic coach Dennis Csensits acknowledged the challenges his team faces after losing key players from last season but expressed optimism for their future performance.
Stay tuned for further developments as both teams continue their pursuit of success in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference.
