Perry’s Cornwell, Dominish Dominate at Euclid Sectional Wrestling

BREAKING: High school wrestling stars Abby Cornwell and GG Dominish showcased their skills at the Euclid Sectional on March 1, 2023, both earning individual titles in their weight classes. The duo, who previously stood on the state podium, demonstrated their dominance with a combined total of seven pins in just seven minutes on the mat.

The Perry Pirates finished third in the team standings with 117 points, underscoring their competitive prowess in the girls’ wrestling scene. Dominish, competing at 115 pounds, secured three quick victories, all concluded in the first period, indicating her strategic refinement and readiness for the upcoming challenges.

“It’s honestly cleaning stuff up for us,” Dominish stated, reflecting on her preparation. “I’ve missed some time, and I know Abby has missed some time; it’s just having everything down that we want to work on.”

Cornwell, wrestling at 110 pounds, also exhibited impressive skills, particularly in her final match against Ahnai Welchans of Kirtland. After struggling initially, she executed a double leg takedown in the second period that led to her victory. “This year I’ve noticed a lot more of putting moves together as well,” Cornwell remarked, emphasizing the mental aspect of wrestling.

The Perry Pirates also welcomed two other district qualifiers, the Kutscher sisters, who contributed significantly to the team’s success. Eva Kutscher placed second at 235 pounds, while Emily Kutscher finished third at 170 pounds.

The growth of girls’ wrestling at Perry has been remarkable, with strong support from their male counterparts. “It makes it feel so much more like a family,” Cornwell noted, highlighting the camaraderie in the wrestling room. “Everyone gets along, and we understand each other’s feelings.”

In addition to Perry’s achievements, Riverside freshman London Davis made a notable impact at her first sectional, finishing with a 22-7 record for the season. She demonstrated resilience and skill, winning her championship match by injury default after a strong performance in her semifinal.

Other individual champions included Kaila Gridiron from Lake Catholic at 105 pounds and Giselle Moreno from Harvey at 190 pounds. Several other athletes are now set to advance, including Sophia Turner (170, 2nd) and Nevaeh Hibbard (115, 4th), ensuring a competitive future in the sport.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on these talented young wrestlers as they continue their journey towards state championships. Stay tuned for updates as they gear up for the next phase of their wrestling careers.
