Pittsburg Pirates Dominate Cardinal Newman 42-17 for 5th NCS Title

UPDATE: The Pittsburg Pirates have decisively defeated Cardinal Newman 42-17, clinching their fifth consecutive North Coast Section Division I championship at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, California, on November 28, 2025. The victory marks yet another dominant performance for the Pirates, solidifying their status as a powerhouse in high school football.

From the very first whistle, Pittsburg took control, showcasing an unstoppable offense and a fierce defense that left Cardinal Newman scrambling. By the time the final horn sounded, the field resembled a battlefield, littered with visors and mouthpieces, as jubilant Pirates celebrated their triumph with a bucket of lime Gatorade poured over head coach Charlie Ramirez.

Pittsburg quarterback Javale Jones delivered an impressive performance, completing 18 of 31 passes for 255 yards and three touchdowns—all in the first half. Sophomore sensation Kenneth Ward also shined, racking up 133 yards and two touchdowns on just eight receptions.

Cardinal Newman struggled with injuries, missing key players including starting quarterback Tino Retamoza and defensive lineman King Pitts. This disadvantage became evident as the Cardinals managed only a field goal in the first quarter after a 12-play drive, quickly losing ground to the relentless Pirates.

Pittsburg wasted no time responding, with Jones connecting with wide receiver Ramire Lewis for a 37-yard touchdown and then further extending the lead through a series of explosive plays. The Pirates went into halftime with a commanding lead, up by 17 points, leaving Cardinal Newman with little hope for a comeback.

The second half saw senior quarterback Carlos Torres step in, leading an impressive nine-play, 80-yard drive capped by a 12-yard touchdown pass to King Wade. Torres completed 8 of 10 passes for 175 yards and three touchdowns, all scored in a single quarter as Pittsburg surged to a colossal 39-point lead.

Despite Cardinal Newman scoring two late touchdowns, the game had already been decided, and the clock ran out on their hopes. The victory is particularly significant for seniors RJ Mosley and Truly Bell, both of whom are set to play Division I football next season and have now claimed their fourth consecutive NCS Division I title.

Coach Ramirez emphasized the grit and determination that defines Pittsburg football, stating, “It’s been a long process, but at the end of the day, this is what we’ve been preaching for honestly the last 10 plus years.”

As the Pirates hoisted the trophy once again, the atmosphere was electric, filled with the pride of a community that has supported its football program through generations. With their sights now set on a state title, Pittsburg continues to build on a legacy of excellence in high school sports.
