BREAKING: A police shooting in Queens early Sunday morning has left a man dead after he allegedly charged at officers with a box cutter. The incident occurred at approximately 12:25 a.m. on December 21 at 1170 Nameoke St. in Far Rockaway.
Officials with the NYPD report that officers from the 101st Precinct were dispatched following a 911 call regarding a domestic disturbance involving a father and son. Upon arrival, officers met with the father and mother, and they entered the apartment to locate their 29-year-old son, who was not found initially.
As officers and the parents were leaving the apartment, the son was spotted in the hallway brandishing a box cutter. NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera stated, “The officers gave multiple verbal commands to the male to drop the weapon. The male did not comply.”
As the situation escalated, the father moved behind the officers for safety. The son then charged at the officers with the box cutter. One officer deployed a Taser, while another fired their weapon, striking the man.
Emergency services were called immediately, and the suspect was transported to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The officers involved in the shooting were evaluated but reported no injuries.
“This incident once again demonstrates the dangers that our police officers face every day and how a routine call can quickly escalate into an extremely dangerous situation,” Rivera added.
The NYPD Force Investigation Division is currently conducting an examination of the events leading up to the shooting. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges and risks faced by law enforcement during domestic disturbance calls.
