Project Fire Buddies Wins $60K Gala at Hollywood Casino Joliet

UPDATE: Project Fire Buddies has just won a gala event valued at $60,000 at the new Hollywood Casino Joliet, an incredible opportunity to raise funds for critically ill children. This major announcement comes as the nonprofit celebrates its decade-long commitment to bringing joy to children battling cancer in Illinois and beyond.

The gala, hosted at the casino’s expansive 10,000-square-foot event center, will provide food, non-alcoholic beverages, table wine service, and comprehensive A/V production for 400 guests. Hollywood Casino Joliet has pledged 40 hours of volunteer support to ensure the event’s success.

Kurt DeGroot, a firefighter/paramedic and president of Project Fire Buddies, expressed gratitude for the recognition. “This shows they care about the most vulnerable in their community,” he stated, reflecting on the honor of being selected among numerous worthy nonprofits.

Project Fire Buddies, which originated in Oak Forest, has expanded to over 170 chapters across 15 states over the past decade. The organization provides tailored gifts and support to children facing serious health challenges, offering a range of experiences from toys to dream trips to places like Disney World.

DeGroot’s journey began when he noticed the emotional uplift children experienced during visits from firefighters. “I realized even though the kids felt really bad, they kind of brightened up when they saw the firefighters come in,” he said. This inspired him to create a funding source, as city budgets often overlook such emotional support initiatives.

While the gala is set for the fall, it promises to attract donations that will directly benefit sick children and their families. Mike Lough, a territory manager for Project Fire Buddies, underscored the event’s significance: “It will strengthen our connection to the surrounding community,” he affirmed.

In addition to the Hollywood Casino event, Project Fire Buddies is organizing its own annual gala on February 7, 2024, at the Tinley Park Convention Center, which is expected to draw 1,500 attendees and will host 36 families connected to the organization. This dual approach reflects DeGroot’s commitment to ensuring that every child feels valued and supported, even if only for a night.

The emotional impact of Project Fire Buddies resonates deeply within the community. DeGroot’s own family has been integral to the organization’s success, with his wife and children actively participating in planning and delivering gifts. Their sacrifices, like limiting their own Christmas presents, highlight the strong familial bonds that fuel this noble cause.

As the organization gears up for these major events, local residents and supporters are encouraged to get involved and help spread the word. With its focused mission and expanding reach, Project Fire Buddies is poised to continue making a profound difference in the lives of children facing life-threatening illnesses.
