UPDATE: The Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC) volleyball team is set to make a thrilling return to the NJCAA Division III national tournament as the fourth seed, kicking off their campaign on Thursday, Nov. 13, at 3 p.m. This marks a significant step up from last year’s performance, where they finished in 10th place as the 13th seed.
In a dramatic shift, RCTC boasts a 22-8 overall record heading into the tournament, showcasing their impressive journey this season. The Yellowjackets will face off against No. 13 seed Brookdale Community College at the Alliant Energy Powerhouse Arena in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Head coach Jen Nerison expressed a renewed confidence this year, stating, “We’re coming into nationals, and we’re seeded fourth… I think we could at least land in fourth, but why not aim for the top?” The team’s momentum is undeniable, having dominated their regional semifinal and championship matches.
The Yellowjackets’ success can be attributed to their strong camaraderie, with many players having previously played together in club teams, fostering a competitive spirit. Six players hail from southeastern Minnesota high schools, reinforcing their local bond. “There’s a little bit of familiarity,” Nerison noted, highlighting how their relationships off the court translate into stronger teamwork during games.
Key players stepping up include freshman right side hitter Lily Holtan, who leads the team with 427 kills, and freshman setter Carmen Nerison, who has delivered 1,024 set assists this season. Their dynamic performance has propelled the Yellowjackets to their best results since the 2019-20 season.
“We’re definitely a very skilled group of girls,” Holtan remarked. “Our emotional connection has helped us get past tough times during the season.”
The Yellowjackets last captured the NJCAA D-3 National Championship in 2015, and with their current form, hopes are high for another title run. They are not just competing; they are aiming for greatness, with expectations to surpass last year’s performance.
As the excitement builds for their national opener, RCTC fans are rallying around the team, eager to see if they can turn their aspirations into reality. The Yellowjackets are primed for a thrilling tournament run, and the volleyball community is buzzing with anticipation for this pivotal matchup.
