Santa Clarita’s Polar Plunge Thrills 120 Participants on January 6

URGENT UPDATE: The 14th annual Polar Plunge at the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center kicked off with a splash on January 6, 2026, drawing in 120 participants ready to take the icy dive! This year’s event proved more challenging than last year’s, with temperatures hitting a brisk 60 degrees Fahrenheit, adding to the thrill for those daring enough to plunge.

Participants came dressed in creative costumes, from bananas to fairies, showcasing a spirited community atmosphere. “This is aging insanity,” exclaimed Shelley Carr, a water exercise class regular. Fellow participant B. Clark, who has attended over 500 classes, noted how community activism transformed their exercise program into a supportive fellowship. “We organized to save our classes and ended up forming lasting friendships,” Clark shared.

This year’s plunge not only featured seasoned participants but also welcomed a significant number of newcomers, especially kids, according to Samantha Shere, an employee at the Aquatic Center. “The goal is to create an opportunity for the community to come together regardless of the weather. It’s a fun way to start the new year,” stated Lance O’Keefe, the city’s Recreation & Community Services Manager.

The O’Keefe family, including Kelly O’Keefe and their daughters, Presley and Emmie, have been regular attendees. Their friend, Sadie Pratchard, decided to join last minute, highlighting the spontaneous fun of the event: “We were hanging out in the car yesterday, and they told me about it, and I said ‘Sure,’” she recounted.

The Polar Plunge has evolved since its inception. After a hiatus during the pandemic, Pete McJunkin, the Aquatic Center’s Recreation Coordinator, confirmed, “It’s been running strong for the last four years or so.” Originally held on New Year’s Day, the event was moved to the first Saturday after the New Year, allowing families to celebrate the holiday and participate in the plunge without conflict.

As the community gathered at the Aquatic Center, the atmosphere buzzed with excitement and camaraderie. This event not only encourages participation but also fosters connections among locals, proving that even a chilly dip can warm hearts and forge friendships.

With the plunge successfully completed, organizers and participants are already discussing next year’s event, hoping to attract even more plungers. The Polar Plunge continues to be a cherished tradition, embracing the spirit of community and resilience, no matter the weather.
