UPDATE: The Saugus High School girls’ basketball team is making headlines with an impressive 4-1 record to start the new season, highlighted by senior guard Jasmine Garcia breaking the school record for the most 3-point shots made in five games. Garcia has sunk 26 threes at an astounding 52% shooting rate, averaging 16 points per game.
In a decisive victory over Knight High School of Palmdale on Monday, Garcia scored 18 points and recorded three blocks, showcasing her dominance on the court. Head coach Anthony Falasca shared his excitement, stating, “Coming into this year was a big test… just play basketball.”
Falasca emphasized the team’s experience, noting that seven seniors have been on the varsity roster since their freshman year. “Some of these girls have played 100-plus varsity games,” he explained, highlighting their familiarity with the system he has implemented.
The Centurions kicked off the season strong, defeating high-caliber teams like Chaminade and Camarillo, and extended their winning streak to three games with a win over St. Joseph of Santa Maria. Despite a setback against the Ventura Cougars, Falasca reassured fans, saying, “We just kind of gassed out towards the end,” after four games in four days.
On Monday, the Centurions rebounded with a commanding 60-29 win over Knight, led by senior point guard EvaMarie Rios, who contributed 10 points, six assists, seven rebounds, and four steals.
Looking ahead, Falasca is optimistic about the team’s prospects for the Foothill League title, aiming for an outright victory with a goal of 12-0 in league play. “2020 was the last time we got a league title, and I’ve never liked sharing since I was a kid,” he remarked, reinforcing his competitive spirit.
The Centurions are set to face Castaic on Tuesday, with tip-off scheduled for 5 p.m.. As they seek to maintain their momentum, all eyes will be on Saugus to see if they can continue this record-breaking start to the season.
