UPDATE: The legacy of beloved Oakland Coach John Beam is being honored in a heartfelt tribute, with a special screening of the acclaimed documentary series “Last Chance U” taking place on Saturday afternoon at Skyline High School in Oakland, California. This event, organized by alumni, draws together generations impacted by Beam’s profound influence.
The screening serves as a poignant reminder of Beam’s contributions, especially following his tragic death in November, when he was shot at Laney College. Authorities have classified the incident as a targeted shooting involving a former student. Alumni organizer Charles Lassey, from the Class of 2000, emphasized the event’s urgency, stating, “It took Coach Beam getting taken away from us to say, ‘Hey. We need to do something.'”
The Skyline High Class of 2000 invited former students to the screening, which also doubled as a fundraiser for a Class of 2000 teacher appreciation grant. Attendees included alumni from various years, all eager to pay tribute to a man who shaped their lives.
Attendee Christina Macalino, who graduated in 2000 and had Beam as her P.E. teacher, reminisced about his iconic mustache and tough yet nurturing approach. “He was supportive, inspiring. He brought out the talent and cultivated the talent he saw in students,” Macalino said. “He believed in the Oakland community.”
Beam dedicated over 45 years to teaching and coaching, impacting countless lives, including over 20 athletes who advanced to the NFL. His legacy as a father figure is echoed by fellow alumni like Mark Stauffer, Class of 1978, who stated, “He took guys out of the gutter and turned them into Pro-Bowlers.”
Even those who never played under Beam, such as Eric Romero from the Class of 2017, attended to support a man who gave so much to the community. “He saw more than just student-athletes. He saw them for what they were as a person,” Romero shared.
