Snow Hits Chicago: Hazardous Roads and Emergency Alerts Issued

UPDATE: Snow is actively falling in the Chicago area, creating hazardous driving conditions as of Sunday morning, November 25, 2023. The National Weather Service has issued multiple alerts for this severe weather, warning residents to stay cautious on the slick roads.

Snow began accumulating between 9 p.m. Saturday and midnight, with totals expected to reach between 2 to 3 inches in most areas. Some locations north of Interstate 80 may experience isolated totals of up to 4 inches. Rain is predicted to mix in for regions like Kankakee, southern Will, Grundy, and southern LaSalle counties, which could impact snow totals.

As of 5 a.m. today, lingering flurries are reported south of I-80, according to ABC7 meteorologist Jaisol Martinez, who has issued an AccuWeather Alert for the morning. Roads have become treacherous, prompting officials to advise drivers to proceed with extreme caution.

Lake-effect snow is expected to persist in both Illinois and Indiana through midday, with temperatures set to drop this afternoon. Additional snow may begin to accumulate in the evening hours, potentially adding another inch in parts of the region.

The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation has announced activation of a Phase II snow program, deploying over 220 salt spreaders citywide. Crews will focus on maintaining arterial streets, bridges, and overpasses to ensure safe passage for emergency services and public transportation.

Authorities are urging everyone to stay informed and prepared for adverse weather conditions. More snow is forecasted throughout the week, followed by a significant temperature drop expected next Saturday.

Residents are encouraged to stay updated on the latest weather developments and to share safety tips with friends and family as conditions continue to unfold.
