UPDATE: Sterling Heights is ramping up efforts for its 47th Annual Ken Stempowski Memorial Food Drive, responding to critical needs as SNAP benefits have been halted amid the ongoing federal shutdown. This urgent initiative, led by the Department of Public Works, aims to combat escalating food insecurity in the community.
The food drive, which has been a staple in Sterling Heights for nearly five decades, takes on heightened importance this year. “Ken’s legacy reminds us that one person’s compassion can create lasting change,” stated DPW Director Mike Moore. His words resonate deeply as the city partners with the Chaldean Community Foundation, broadening the food drive’s impact to reach even more residents in need.
Donation bins are now positioned at key locations across Sterling Heights, including City Hall, the Community Center, and the Sterling Heights Public Library. Residents can contribute nonperishable food items until December 17. The partnership with the Chaldean Community Foundation is particularly crucial, as it aims to address the needs of all residents impacted by the recent SNAP cuts.
In addition to physical food donations, monetary contributions are also welcomed. All funds raised will directly support the Community Food Bank of Macomb County, which provides essential services to local food pantries and meal programs.
Mayor Michael C. Taylor emphasized the community’s resilience, stating, “This food drive is a testament to the spirit of Sterling Heights. We are committed to supporting every resident during this challenging time.” Contributions can also be made during the upcoming Sterling Christmas event, scheduled for early December, further enhancing visibility and outreach for the food drive.
This year’s food drive is more than just a collection; it’s a lifeline for many families facing unprecedented food insecurity. As the community rallies together, each donation serves as a reminder of the power of collective compassion in times of crisis.
Residents are encouraged to take action now—visit any of the donation sites or participate in fostering change during the Sterling Christmas event. Every contribution counts in the fight against hunger in Sterling Heights.
Stay tuned for more updates on how the community is responding and the collective impact of these generous acts.
