Surf Legend Kurt Van Dyke Killed by Armed Intruders in Costa Rica

URGENT UPDATE: Surf legend Kurt Van Dyke, 66, was tragically killed by armed intruders on July 15, 2023, in his home in Cahuita, Costa Rica. A well-known figure from a prominent Santa Cruz surfing family, Van Dyke was also the owner of Hotel Puerto Viejo, a popular hostel in the region.

According to reports, two armed intruders broke into Van Dyke’s apartment, tying up both him and his 31-year-old girlfriend, identified only as Arroyo. The assailants held them captive for several minutes before violently assaulting Van Dyke and fleeing with valuables, including a vehicle. His body was later discovered hidden under a bed, covered with a sheet, showing signs of asphyxiation and multiple stab wounds. A knife was reportedly found at the scene.

“My brother was a very benevolent, giving person who would help just about anybody,” stated Peter Van Dyke, Kurt’s brother, in a message to the press. “Kurt would never hurt anybody, and he was always there when you needed him.”

As authorities investigate, this shocking incident has raised alarms in the typically peaceful region. While Cahuita and nearby towns have been known for their low crime rates, the presence of organized crime in the broader Limón province complicates the situation. Roger Sams, president of the Southern Caribbean Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, expressed disbelief at the violence, emphasizing that incidents like this are rare and usually do not involve tourists.

Sams stated, “We have the Police delegation in Playa Negra, the cantonal, which is the most modern in the country… It shocks us and hurts us, because the Caribbean has been very calm.” He reassured the community that this was an isolated case, with no recent violence reported against tourists.

Historically, crime in the province has been concentrated in its capital, Puerto Limón, where gang-related activities have surged, particularly since the opening of a new port in 2019. Alarmingly, Puerto Limón accounts for 25% of all homicides in Costa Rica.

Van Dyke, who began surfing at the age of 7, was remembered fondly by his brother, who reflected on their shared love for the ocean and their family farm. “It’s a very sad time because of all the great memories we have growing up together, farming and surfing,” Peter shared.

The surfing community is mourning the loss of a beloved figure, with friends expressing their sorrow on social media. “Some people leave footprints — you left waves,” one friend wrote, capturing the essence of Van Dyke’s impact on the lives of those around him.

As investigations continue, the focus remains on ensuring safety and restoring peace in the area. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant as they work to bring the perpetrators to justice.
