Team USA delivered a strong performance in the men’s and women’s speedskating team pursuit semifinals at the 2024 World Championships in Milan, but ultimately secured silver for the men and finished fourth for the women. The men faced China in their semifinal, while the women took on Canada, both aiming for a spot in the finals.
In the men’s semifinal, which took place on March 5, 2024, Team USA featured athletes Ethan Cepuran, Casey Dawson, Emery Lehman, and Conor McDermott-Mostowy. The U.S. team, having set a world record for men’s team pursuit in November and previously winning bronze at the 2022 Beijing Games, was highly favored to win gold. The Americans gained momentum quickly, defeating China by a significant margin of over seven seconds to advance to the final against host nation Italy.
The final race began with both teams neck and neck, showcasing the competitive spirit of the event. Midway through, Team USA established a half-second lead, demonstrating their strength and speed. However, Italy surged ahead in the final lap, ultimately finishing three seconds ahead of the Americans. Team USA’s men secured silver, a commendable achievement given the fierce competition.
Meanwhile, the women’s team pursuit also unfolded on the same day. Team USA, consisting of Brittany Bowe, Giorgia Birkeland, Greta Myers, and Mia Manganello, faced Canada in the semifinals. The U.S. skaters started strong but found themselves trailing as Canada reclaimed the lead with three laps remaining. As the race progressed, Canada extended its advantage to over two seconds, ultimately securing a place in the gold medal final.
The final showdown for the women’s event featured Canada and the Netherlands. In a dynamic race, Canada executed a strategic approach, allowing the Dutch team to tire before seizing control in the latter half. Canada crossed the finish line with a comfortable lead of nearly a second, earning gold, while the Netherlands took silver. Team USA’s women finished fourth, falling short of the bronze medal as Japan delivered a strong performance.
The team pursuit format in Olympic speedskating involves three skaters from each country racing together, starting from opposite sides of the track. Teams compete in elimination heats, with the winners advancing to Final A for gold or silver, while the losing teams compete in Final B for bronze.
As the World Championships continue, Team USA’s achievements highlight their competitive spirit and dedication, setting the stage for future events.
