UPDATE: In a shocking incident just days before Christmas, tenants at Thomas Paine Square in San Francisco have accused property management staff of breaking into their apartments and stealing Christmas gifts valued at over $2,000. The incident, which has been captured on surveillance video, is now under investigation by the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD).
The video shows individuals, confirmed to be employees of Domus Management Company, attempting to disable security cameras while removing multiple items from the residences. Tenant Aveda Hussain expressed her devastation, stating, “They took advent calendars, Build-A-Bear kits, gifts meant for friends and family.” This breach of trust has left many residents feeling unsafe and violated in their own homes.
A representative from the tenants’ association, Barbara Carthen, revealed that this is not an isolated incident. “Reports indicate repeated thefts and rising rents, adding to the distress of residents,” she said. The emotional toll is profound, with tenant organizer Patrick Cochran describing the situation as “the spirit of Christmas robbed” and calling it a “huge violation of trust.”
In a statement, Cathy M. Metcalf, president of Domus Management, claimed that the items taken were not gifts and referred to the victim as a “squatter,” which Hussain disputes, affirming the tenant’s legal right to reside there. As anger grows among residents, many are demanding thorough background checks and drug testing for all management staff to prevent such violations in the future.
The SFPD confirmed that they received a burglary report on December 13, 2025, related to the incident on December 11, 2025. No arrests have been made yet, as the investigation remains active. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.
Residents are now calling for immediate action from Domus Management, including changing all locks to ensure their safety. The emotional distress caused by this incident has left many tenants feeling vulnerable, especially those with special needs, as highlighted by Hussain.
As the investigation unfolds, the community watches closely for updates, hoping for justice and a restoration of trust in their living environment. The urgency of this situation cannot be overstated, especially during a time meant for celebration and goodwill.
