Urgent Snowfall Hits NYC: Winter Advisory in Effect Until 1 PM

UPDATE: New Yorkers are experiencing the first snowfall of the season as a winter weather advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m. today. By 8 a.m. Sunday, several inches of snow had already blanketed parts of the city, with 3 to 5 inches expected across the metro area, and localized totals reaching up to 6 inches.

The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that snowfall will continue throughout the morning and afternoon, with the heaviest accumulation anticipated before noon. Hazardous road conditions are already impacting travel, as slick and snow-covered roads pose risks to commuters. “Slow down and use caution while traveling,” urged NWS meteorologists.

Temperatures will remain low today, peaking at just 32 degrees Fahrenheit and dipping to a chilly 20 degrees. While snow is not expected for Monday’s commute, the freezing temperatures will likely create icy conditions on streets and sidewalks, heightening the need for caution.

New York City property owners are reminded of their responsibility to clear sidewalks within four hours after the snowfall ends. Failing to comply could result in fines ranging from $100 to $150.

As the NYC Emergency Management tracks the coastal storm, travel disruptions have already been reported. The city’s 1, A, and R trains are experiencing significant delays as of 8 a.m., while LaGuardia Airport reports some flights delayed by over two hours. Departures and arrivals at JFK Airport may also be impacted.

Residents are encouraged to stay updated on the evolving weather conditions by visiting nyc.gov or calling 311. This developing situation underscores the need for vigilance as New York City faces its first significant snowfall of the season.
