UPDATE: The 2025-26 wrestling season is officially underway across the Front Range, with teams and athletes gearing up for a competitive year. With significant shifts in team lineups and returning talent, expectations are soaring as schools prepare for the upcoming state tournament in February 2025.
The Broomfield Eagles, under Coach Jimmy Zechmann, qualified an impressive eight wrestlers last year for the Class 5A state tournament, finishing as regional runner-ups. This year, they are determined to improve upon their 16th place team finish. Senior standout Nick Penfold, ranked No. 4 at 157 pounds, leads a roster featuring multiple returning state qualifiers. “After a disappointing finish last winter, we aim for a top 10 result at Ball Arena,” Zechmann stated.
In Boulder, the Panthers are optimistic as they welcome a new energy to the team. Coach William Leboeuf highlighted the potential of senior captains Isaac Wing and Alex Smith, who have been training hard. “Ollie Reynolds is looking stronger and more technical, ready to make an impact this season,” Leboeuf said.
The Erie Tigers, coached by Joe Ferrera, are also looking to bounce back after finishing 10th last year. With four returning state qualifiers, including senior Tyler Muir, they are poised to make a run at the state tournament. “We’ve graduated a lot of seniors, but our returning core is ready to step up,” Ferrera noted.
Meanwhile, the Holy Family Tigers are not to be overlooked. Coaches Ernie Derrera and Nestor Pino are optimistic about their chances with senior Lorenzo Trujillo, ranked No. 2 in the 120s after a strong showing last season. “We have three returning state placers and a strong team depth,” said Derrera, aiming for a top-three finish at state.
Additionally, the girls’ wrestling scene is heating up as well. The Broomfield Eagles, led by Coach Luci Schement, are generating buzz with junior Shayla Martinez, the reigning state champion at 190 pounds, ranked No. 1 entering the season. “Interest in girls’ wrestling is growing, and we’re excited about our lineup,” Schement shared.
