UPDATE: Starting as early as December 1, 2025, a critical segment of the Virginia Capital Trail will be closed for urgent bridge repairs. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced a multiweek closure to replace the bridge deck and substructure between mile markers 3 and 4 along the Jamestown leg of this vital 52-mile trail.
Residents and visitors should prepare for the trail closure along John Tyler Highway (Route 5) from just east of Governor’s Landing Road to Heritage Landing Road. This section will be inaccessible for an estimated two to three weeks, pending weather conditions.
The necessary construction involves the installation of new composite decking boards designed with enhanced texture to improve friction, significantly boosting safety for both pedestrians and cyclists. This enhancement is critical, considering the trail’s popularity among outdoor enthusiasts and commuters alike.
The Virginia Capital Trail serves as a crucial connection between Jamestown and downtown Richmond, providing both recreational opportunities and a safe transit route. Furthermore, a planned Trail757 project aims to extend this trail to connect with Colonial Williamsburg, enhancing regional connectivity.
With the closure set to begin in less than a month, locals are encouraged to plan alternate routes for their travels and outdoor activities. The VDOT will continue to provide updates as the construction progresses and any changes to the timeline arise.
Stay tuned for more urgent updates on this developing story. Share this news with fellow trail users and community members to ensure everyone is informed!
