UPDATE: The University of Wisconsin-Superior (UWS) has made headlines today with a stunning performance in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC), clinching championships in both men’s soccer and men’s cross country.
In men’s soccer, UWS concluded its regular season with an impressive 8-0 victory over Martin Luther at Superior Choice Credit Union Stadium. The Yellowjackets dominated the match, scoring four goals within the first 18 minutes, with standout player Bryce Boldt netting two of them. This victory marks UWS’s eighth consecutive conference title, having already secured the championship with a 4-0 win against Bethany Lutheran the previous day. The Yellowjackets have finished the season with a perfect 12-0 record in UMAC play.
On the cross country front, UWS continued its legacy, achieving a fifth consecutive UMAC championship on Saturday, October 28, 2023. The men’s team swept the podium, claiming the top four positions and securing a near-perfect score of just 15 points. Dylan Uitto led the team with a personal best of 26:18.1 in the 8-kilometer race. This championship victory signifies UWS’s enduring dominance in the league, with a total of eight titles in program history.
In women’s soccer, however, the Yellowjackets faced disappointment, losing their four-year reign as regular-season champions after finishing third in the standings. A 2-1 loss to Bethany Lutheran at home ended their title hopes, despite outshooting their opponents 20-9. The Yellowjackets managed to score only in the 89th minute from Niamh Larson, too late to alter the outcome.
Looking ahead, the UWS men’s soccer team will host fourth-place Crown in a tournament semifinal on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at 5 p.m. Meanwhile, the women’s soccer team will travel to Mankato for their semifinal matchup against Bethany Lutheran on the same day at 4:30 p.m.
In other sports news, the UWS men’s hockey team opened the season with a commanding 7-0 victory against Marian, showcasing their strength as they aim for a successful run this year. The team capitalized on just 25 shots on goal, with Justin Dauphinais scoring the first goal shorthanded.
Conversely, the women’s hockey team is still searching for their first goal of the season after suffering consecutive shutout losses to Lake Forest, 5-0 and 2-0.
As UWS continues to make waves in various sports, fans and supporters are eager to see how the upcoming tournament matches will unfold. With the stakes high and the competition fierce, all eyes will be on the Yellowjackets as they strive for glory in the postseason.
