URGENT UPDATE: Walter Bernard Ament, a beloved family man and storyteller, has passed away at the age of 93. He died on October 28, 2025, surrounded by his family at his daughter’s home in Morgan Park, MN. This loss is felt deeply by those who knew him, marking the end of a remarkable life filled with diverse talents and cherished relationships.
Born on June 5, 1932, in Bluffton, MN, Walter was the son of Joseph and Katherine Ament. Throughout his long life, he embraced many roles: farmer, miner, logger, fisherman, and cowboy. However, to his family, he was most notably a devoted father, grandfather, and friend who touched countless lives with his warmth and wisdom.
Walter married his childhood pen pal, Dorothy Blotti, on January 21, 1956. Together, they built a loving family and shared unforgettable memories. He is survived by his daughters, Pamella Wallgren and Mary Johnson, and his sister, Mary Alice Otto, along with numerous grandchildren and extended family. His passing leaves a significant void for his loved ones, who remember him as a brilliant mentor and a good man.
The family has expressed profound gratitude for the compassionate care received from the hospice staff at Essentia Health, particularly Brandy, Cindy, and Nate, along with support from the VA Care Planning Institute and other caregivers during this challenging time.
Visitation will take place from 10 AM until the 11 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, November 7, 2025, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, located at 2410 Morris Thomas Road. The service will be officiated by Fr. Anthony Craig, followed by burial at Oneota Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by the Duluth Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, honoring Walt’s legacy of love and care for others.
