UPDATE: Washington State is taking a bold step towards government transparency with the announcement of a new Public Records and Open Government Unit by the Attorney General’s Office. This initiative, confirmed today, aims to modernize public records processes and restore public trust amid rising demand for transparency.
The newly established unit will feature the state’s first-ever Chief Transparency Counsel, a role designed to oversee enhancements in managing public records requests. This comes as the AG’s office faces a staggering increase in requests, with numbers soaring from 528 in 2014 to over 1,032 in 2024. Attorney General Nick Brown emphasized the urgency of this initiative, stating, “Transparency is a key part of the work we do every day to protect and support Washingtonians.”
The AG’s office is also implementing significant updates to the model rules for responding to Public Records Act requests. These changes aim to streamline processes across state agencies, ensuring timely access to public records. A public comment period is currently underway, with an in-person hearing scheduled for October 19, 2023, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the John A. Cherberg Building. Remote participation via Zoom will also be available.
The Chief Transparency Counsel search has just concluded, with applications now closed. The selection process is expected to finalize by the end of December 2023, marking a pivotal moment in the state’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
This initiative is particularly timely, as public trust in government is increasingly fragile. The AG’s office is dedicated to ensuring that Washingtonians have the tools to understand and oversee their government. For those interested in participating in the upcoming hearing, further details are available on the AG’s official website.
The formation of this new unit signals a significant shift in how Washington State will address the demands for public records and open government. By consolidating resources and leadership, the AG’s office is set to make vital improvements in how it responds to public inquiries, reinforcing the importance of transparency as a cornerstone of effective governance in Washington State. This proactive approach aims not only to meet current demands but also to foster an informed and engaged citizenry moving forward.
