BREAKING: The Whitman County Genealogical Society and the Whitman County Historical Society have just announced their new shared location in Pullman, marking a significant moment for local history enthusiasts. Residents are invited to explore this new space at the Community Congregational United Church of Christ, located at 525 NE Campus Ave, Room 102, during an open house today from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
This urgent transition comes after both organizations were displaced following the unexpected closure of the Gladish Community and Cultural Center in September 2023. With only two weeks to relocate their valuable archives and resources, the societies are rallying to continue their mission of preserving Whitman County’s rich history.
Monica Peters, correspondence secretary at the genealogical society, stated, “We are committed to filling in the gaps of people’s family history. Our organization provides unique information that often cannot be found online.” Alex Otero, archivist at the historical society, added that their focus is on the “where” and “what” of local history, offering tangible collections that reflect the county’s heritage.
Both organizations have been vital in helping the community connect with its past. The genealogical society, established in 1984, has grown significantly, moving into the Gladish in 1992. The historical society, founded in 1972, made its home there in 1987. Peters emphasized the importance of their work, saying, “People have a keen interest in learning about their ancestry. Our efforts help residents feel a connection to their history and their community.”
Today’s open house offers an opportunity to discover a wealth of resources, including family history records, archival materials, and local artifacts. The societies will operate every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon or by appointment. While the historical society provides free research assistance, the genealogical society charges $20 per hour for in-depth exploration of family histories.
As both groups embark on this new chapter, they are asking the community to support their efforts in preserving the region’s past. The loss of their previous location was a shock, but their commitment to collecting and sharing local history remains steadfast. “We’re excited to welcome everyone to our new home,” Peters said. “It’s a fresh start, and we look forward to engaging with the community in new ways.”
For those unable to attend today’s open house, more information about the societies can be found online. Learn more about the Whitman County Historical Society at whitmancountyhistoricalsociety.org and the Whitman County Genealogical Society at whitmancgs.org.
