A police operation in Liverpool, Australia, successfully thwarted a suspected terror plot targeting Bondi Beach, just days after a deadly shooting at the same location. On March 15, 2024, a police LandCruiser reportedly rammed a vehicle believed to be carrying men with potentially violent intentions. This incident follows a tragic attack on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach on March 10, which left at least 15 people dead and over 40 injured.
In a swift response to a tip-off regarding a planned “violent act,” law enforcement from the New South Wales Police (NSW), the Australian Federal Police (AFP), and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) apprehended five individuals. Eyewitness footage captured heavily armed officers escorting the suspects, who were restrained with zip ties, to a safe area. While reports indicate that the men were headed to Bondi Beach, NSW Police did not confirm any arrests but stated that seven men were “assisting police” and the operation had “concluded.”
Investigation and Response
According to multiple sources, including news.com.au, the police found no connections between these men and the recent Bondi Beach attack. This comes as the community mourns the loss of victims, including the youngest, Matilda, who was laid to rest in another part of Sydney.
The threat level in Australia has heightened following the attack carried out by a father-son duo of Pakistani descent, who opened fire on innocent civilians during a holiday celebration. The situation intensified when an unarmed civilian intervened to stop the violence. In light of these events, AFP Commissioner Chrissy Barrett announced plans for “further search warrants” and ongoing investigations into individuals promoting hate.
Australia has a history of strict firearm regulations implemented after the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, but personal protection is not included as a valid reason for gun ownership. Despite this, Sajid Akram, who died during the Bondi shooting, had obtained a firearms license and was not on any terror watch lists, even though his son had links to extremist groups. Reports indicate that a shotgun was used in the attack, a type of firearm expressly prohibited under Australian law.
As the investigation continues, authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to prevent further incidents and ensure public safety. The community’s resilience is evident, as they come together in solidarity during this challenging time.
