Colombian Politician and 14 Others Killed in Plane Crash

A small plane crashed in the rural region of Norte de Santander province in northeast Colombia on March 15, 2024, resulting in the tragic deaths of all 15 individuals on board, including a member of Congress. The aircraft, operated by the state-owned airline Satena, lost contact with air traffic control shortly after taking off from Cúcuta, the capital of the department, en route to Ocaña.

Local authorities in the community of Curasica reported the crash to the relevant agencies, prompting the deployment of a rescue team to the location. Following the recovery efforts, Colombia’s Transportation Ministry confirmed that there were no survivors among the passengers and crew.

The flight took off at approximately 11:42 a.m. local time, and the aircraft, identified by registration number HK4709, typically completes the journey to Ocaña in about 40 minutes. While officials have yet to determine the cause of the crash, they have announced that an investigation will be conducted to uncover the details surrounding the incident.

Victims Include Prominent Political Figures

Among the victims was Diógenes Quintero, a 36-year-old member of the House of Representatives representing Catatumbo. Quintero was recognized as a prominent human rights advocate in a region frequently affected by conflict and was elected in 2022 to represent over 9 million victims of Colombia’s prolonged armed conflict. His election was part of a historic peace agreement signed in 2016 between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).

Also aboard the ill-fated flight was Carlos Salcedo, a social leader who was actively campaigning for a Congressional seat. Both Quintero and Salcedo were known for their commitment to their communities and their efforts to promote social justice.

The U Party, to which Quintero belonged, expressed profound sorrow over his death, emphasizing his dedication to service and leadership within the region. Colombian President Gustavo Petro conveyed his condolences through social media, stating, “I am deeply saddened by these deaths. My heartfelt condolences to their families. May they rest in peace.”

As investigations into the crash continue, the loss of these influential figures has left a significant void in the local political landscape, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by communities in Colombia’s border areas.
