On October 11, 2023, Akita City, Japan, came alive as approximately 100 participants transformed into foxes for the annual Shofuku-gitsune no Gyoretsu (March of Foxes Inviting Luck) festival. Dressed in vibrant costumes and adorned with painted faces, the participants paraded along the Torimachi shopping street, celebrating a tradition that began in 2002 to invigorate the local commercial area.
Celebrating Community and Tradition
The parade commenced at Shofuku Inari Shrine, situated along the same shopping street, and covered just over a half-mile. As they marched, participants distributed rice stalks and red-and-white daifuku mochi (rice cakes) to onlookers, promoting a festive atmosphere throughout the event. Each time the group passed a shop, they enthusiastically shouted, “Shobai hanjo, kon, kon, kon,” expressing hopes for the prosperity of local businesses. The phrase translates to a wish for commercial success, while “kon” mimics the sound of a fox’s cry, adding a playful element to the celebration.
A first-time participant, a 24-year-old graduate student at Akita International University, shared her excitement about the event. “We all had fun putting on makeup,” she remarked. “The whole community got excited, so it’s a good memory for me.” Her sentiments reflect the joy and unity that the festival instills in the participants and the wider community.
A Tradition of Luck and Prosperity
The Shofuku-gitsune no Gyoretsu festival is rooted in local tradition, aiming to uplift the spirit of the community while fostering local commerce. By reviving the cultural significance of the fox, which is often seen as a symbol of good fortune in Japanese folklore, the festival not only entertains but also reinforces community bonds.
As Akita City continues to celebrate this unique tradition, the festival plays a vital role in promoting local culture and attracting visitors, contributing to the area’s social and economic vitality. The success of this year’s event highlights the ongoing enthusiasm for community-driven activities that bring people together in shared celebration.
