Monmouth Dominates Bryant with Nelson’s 244-Yard Rushing Performance

Rodney Nelson delivered an outstanding performance, rushing for a career-high 244 yards on 34 carries and scoring three touchdowns, leading Monmouth University to a decisive 35-7 victory over Bryant University on November 4, 2023. The win marked the Hawks’ sixth consecutive triumph and improved their record to 8-1 overall and 5-0 in the Coastal Athletic Association.

Monmouth’s offense showcased its strength in the first half, scoring 21 points and setting the tone for the game. The Hawks’ defense also played a crucial role, limiting Bryant to just 226 yards of total offense, despite failing to force any turnovers. The Bulldogs struggled on third down, converting only 4 of 13 attempts, and managed just 1 of 3 on fourth down.

In addition to Nelson’s remarkable rushing performance, quarterback Frankie Weaver contributed significantly. He completed 14 of 19 passes for 218 yards, including two touchdown passes, although he also threw two interceptions. One of his standout plays was a 49-yard touchdown pass to Nelson with just 21 seconds remaining in the first half, extending Monmouth’s lead to 14 points at halftime.

Nelson’s explosive play included a stunning 69-yard touchdown run on the Hawks’ second drive, the longest play of the game. His performance has positioned him as a key asset for Monmouth as they continue their push for the postseason.

For the Bulldogs, who now hold a 2-7 record and 0-5 in conference play, Zyheem Collick led the receiving corps with three catches for 69 yards. Bryant has faced challenges this season, now on a six-game losing streak after starting strong with a 2-1 record, which included an impressive victory over FBS member UMass.

As Monmouth continues its successful season, the team looks ahead to upcoming matchups with renewed confidence, bolstered by Nelson’s exceptional contributions on both the ground and through the air.
